Ben Folds Five - Brick

Brick

6 a.m.,

day after Christmas

I throw some clothes on in the dark

the smell of cold

car seat is freezing

the world is sleeping

I am

numb

up the stairs

to her apartment

she is balled up on the couch

her mom and dad

went down to Charlotte

they're not home to find us out

and we drive

now that I

have found someone

I'm feeling more alone

than I ever have before

she's a brick and I'm

drowning slowly

off the coast and I'm

headed nowhere

she's a brick and I'm

drowning slowly

they call her name

at 7:30

I pace around the parking lot

then I walk down

to buy her flowers

and sell some gifts that I got

can't you see,

it's not me you're dying for?

now she's feeling more alone

than she ever has before

she's a brick and I'm

drowning slowly

off the coast and I'm

headed nowhere

she's a brick and I'm

drowning slowly

as weeks went by

it showed that she was not fine

they told me, "Son, it's time

to tell the truth" and

she broke down

and I broke down

'cause I was tired...

of lying

driving back

to her apartment

for the moment we're alone

yeah, she's alone

and I'm alone

and now I know it

she's a brick and I'm

drowning slowly

off the coast and I'm

headed nowhere

she's a brick and I'm

drowning slowly

This summary won't be anywhere near as long as the other. I think the base concept of the song is clear enough; He and some girl have a secret they don't want anyone to know about and, whether it has to do with the secret or not, he feels she is weighing him down; keeping him from growing. The question i have for you all is this: What is their secret? What is it that he had "tell the truth" about? When he says he found someone, does that mean he and the woman used to be together, or is he referring to her?

As I think we made obvious in our previous song, our interpretations always reflect the person giving them. That having been said... I picture the two of them being together, at one time, happy and free. Things winded own, and time draws on without them; he drifts away and, eventually, they end the relationship... and, maybe a month later, after he's moved on, they find out she's pregnant. The implications this could have on their lives goes without saying; was it given to them as a second chance, or is it just random science?

Weeks go by, however, and the pregnancy isn't going so well. Her unending depression and complete disregard for herself take their toll; she gets an abortion after it becomes obvious to her parents what was going on. And that final verse...

driving back

to her apartment

for the moment we're alone

yeah, she's alone

and I'm alone

and now I know it

Is the bitter silence, the awkward lack of communication on their way home form the abortion clinic.

That's how I read it, at least. I think this song can be interpreted so many ways; what's yours?

Edit: I'lll leave Grouper up today for those of you who want to hear it.
